Please give me you picks for Fingerstyle lesson DVD. I'm wanting to work toward the Tommy Emmanuel and those like him style alternating thumb bass line stuff. I know Tommy has a DVD out. Anyone have it, seen it. IS it worth the time just starting this style or to advanced?

Thanks

There are a lot of DVDs out there. My personal recommendation would be at least these two:

1. Pete Huttlinger's "Essential Exercises for Fingerstyle Guitar"
2. Pete Huttlinger's "A Guitarists Guide to Better Practicing"

I have them both. If you are just beginning to learn the boom/chuck technique, these would be good to start with. Good luck.

I second the Pete Huttlinger advice. He has a good website with free tablature, too.

I've heard intersting things about Pete as well, and the clip I saw on one of his disks certainly gave me a sense that I'd pick up a few things, as he seems to have a very distinct style.

I did buy one of Tommy's disks (Up Close). It's fun to watch him, but there is often not dual cameras and based on the camera angle, it's hard to see his left hand on the neck clearly. I was quite dissappointed from a technical point of view. He seems a very good sort though, and I'll watch it once in a while, but won't buy another right now. It really didn't appear to be a learning disk, at my current level, anyway.

I have this one as well: CONTEMPORARY FINGERSTYLE WORKSHOP (DVD) : Chris Proctor's guitar workshops have helped countless guitarists attain solid technique, inspiration, and new musical ideas. This unique DVD workshop teaches melody playing, rolls, arpeggiated notes, voicings, triplets and the use of devices such as the partial capo, the E-bow and alternate tunings. Includes vital tips on instrument set-up and solutions to sound problems faced by acoustic performers. Songs taught are the Civil War song "Aura Lee" (the tune to Elvis' hit "Love Me Tender"), "Huckleberry Hornpipe" and two Proctor.

Chris's CD is well produced with great camera angles. Only four songs. Two at least are too advance for me and I have no interst in Aura lee. But two of the songs are really nice songs and you get a hard copy.

I've decided that I'm going to try a DVD with songs (teaching particular songs as opposed to teaching the basics of finger picking) and Tab and have gone with

CELTIC INSTRUMENTALS FOR FINGERSTYLE GUITAR DVD 1 & 2 by AL PETTEWAY.

I heard one of his songs on the clip and it sounds wonderful and it appeared to be within scope, so to speak. I'm really looking forward to getting this CD. Always loved celtic/Irish, but have had a heck of a time finding tab for celtic/Irish that I actually want to play.

I heard Eiko's (did I spell that right) recording on his OM1A and I took it to my guitar teacher and he wrote down the notes for the first few sections, so that's what I'll be working on until the CD comes. What a beautiful little tune that is. That's one approach I find extremely helpful. If you have a little tune you love, you need to find someone with the ability to put into tab format. If you have the MP3, you can then learn the music and play along. I love to do that.

All the best

Stuart
