I really want to learn electric guitar. My favorite electric guitarists are BB King, SRV, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, David Gilmour etc.
How difficult is it for a fingerstyle player to learn electric guitars and be able to play Blues Solo? I only play with thumpick and three fingers and never learn to play with a pick. And I am very new to scales etc. I personally feel that learning online lessons could be a better option then going to private classes…Anyone here knows a good source for online lessons for beginners interested in electric guitars.
All the players you cite play, or played, with a flat pick. But some amazing blues guitarists- Freddy King, Albert King, John Lee Hooker, almost all the delta and piedmont cats, played with their thumb or a thumb pick and their fingers. Stevie Ray was most definitely a disciple of Albert King. I'm sure, to start with, that there are many examples on You Tube of those dudes playing some serious blues. Gotta know the pentatonic scale in a deep way. Gotta learn how to bend, pre-bend, slide, vibrato, and all that vocabulary. It's your ears and your fingers, and mostly heart. I started playing blues on a classical guitar, no pick at all. To get comfortable with the feel of a flat pick, I carried one around the house for weeks. didn't feel strange any more. My family thought I'd gone off, but that's nothing new! I'd start with Albert; he said more with fewer notes than anyone I ever saw, with the possible exceptions of Muddy Waters (also no flat pick) and Son House (raw flesh). But start now. American music without the blues somewhere in its lineage is Lawrence Welk. tom
Lot of its in facial expressions aswell, if it wasnt for being famous you would say our heroes were the ugliest people in the world from some of the faces they pull.
There are some great DVDS etc to learn from but another great way is to get something like the Fender G-Dec which has built in grooves that you can play along with , helps get your phrasing and timing down to play to a metranome or beat. Its fun aswell you can turn the lights down low strap on and play away.
In the end these cats really spent many hours improvising.
