You caught it! There is absolutely nothing weird about the way I play. What is weird is that everyone else has not started to play this way.

Rockerbob, you are not alone.. most of the Hong Kong guitarist I met used Hybrid picking just like you. They mostly started out as a folk singer and picked up fingerpicking after years of strum/simple picking and sing.
