Keep your fingers close to the strings (fretting hand), and either your pick or fingers close to the strings (picking hand).

Learn the type of music you like. I was forced by gunpoint(almost) to learn classical as a kid on the piano. I couldnt look at a music chart again till I was 21 and found the guitar. Playing the type of music kids like keeps em interested as well as they already have an idea of how the songs go. Great for motivation.

The more time spent with your fingers on the fretboard is more important than time on the 'net, with a book..etc

Give them a copy of the homespun catalog and see if they can find something they are interested in . It's the easiest way I've found to learn and improve.
