Last night when I was playing Whiskey Before Breakfast, something occured to me: The right (pickin) hand drives the tune, and the left hand follows. As someone who's pretty new to flatpicking, this seemingly simple revelation is a big deal. And as I type this, it seems obvious, but it's one of those things that doesn't make much sense until you figure it out for yourself. I've been working on WBB for 2 weeks or so, and have got the basic tune down pretty well. I was working on picking up speed with it, and half the time the tune was sounding like a bunch of sloppy hammer-ons and pull-offs. Then all of a sudden my right hand was dictating the tune, and it smoothed right out. No more sloppiness. Just the sweet sound of drinking hard liquor early in the morning. Any thoughts about picking with this approach?
