Even though I am a big fan of Collings guitars, I have never really been a big fan of their dreads and I have to say I prefer the Authentic over the D1AV-varnish. I have played a few of them, and a CW varnish, and preferred my Authentic each time. That being said, I'm not a big dread player and my ear typically prefers the tone of an OM or equivalent sized guitar to a dread, and I consider my Authentic to be bright and tight sounding (and LOUD), so I'm sure that has something to do with it. Pure dread players usually prefer the Collings over the Martin D-18 Authentic nearly every time, or so I've witnessed on several occasions. The trick is finding a shop that has BOTH guitars in stock, like The Music Emporium, so you can do a side by side comparison and see for yourself which one you prefer. The price of the two guitars is very similar, so it really comes down to the difference between the feel, playability and tone.

I really love my D-18 Authentic sunburst model. I only had a brief encounter with a D1AV Varnish and it was wonderful. Trouble is it is pretty hard to find them and do a side-by-side test. I did own a OM Varnish and it was the best OM style guitar I have ever heard. It really blew away the new Martin 000-18 Authentic models I've played. Now if anybody wants to swap their D1A V for an authentic, send me an email!
