Well I am reluctant to post this ,after the arrival of cartermac's new JOM, but I need some input.
First the good news I own a Collings D-1A, now the bad news, I also own a new Bourgeois vintage D, as of 24 hours
ago that was a good thing, the problem is I was playing last evening at our usual Friday night band rehearsal
and broke a G string at the saddle, not a big deal I do not break them all the time , so I put on a new string
tuned up started to play, & I'm getting this incredible rattle in the headstock the headstock end of the trussrod
is rattling around, what has happened ?
Looking for input, should I reduce string tension until it is sent out?
The guitar has been well cared for since I purchased new a couple of months ago, though it is a 2005 based on
serial number, I have maintained vigilant humidity control, as always, & my instruments are all in excellent
condition, played but well kept, I feel that this is warranty covered but never having dealt with Bourgeois I
do not know, & of coarse this is the weekend & they are probably not in
oh well any insight well be appreciated
Fred

Could the bolt-on neck be loose?

thank you for responding, I am not sure, it could be, the truss rod has been adjusted, but not man-handled in any way, it was playing great up to the point when I broke the string

Just a couple suggestions on things to check.
If you have a wrench, check to see if the truss rod is still "tight". If it just spins on the access end, it may have snapped. This is not common, but does happen now and then.
Also, check the tuners to make sure they are tight. Both the little locking nut on top and the screw in the back plate. When the string suddenly snapped it could have exaggerated an already loose tuner.

the nut on the top of the truss rod might be loose- i had this happen on one of my collings mandos. it made an awful racket when playing.

in any event, contact Bourgeois at the number listed on their website. Bonnie will take care of you- you can also e-mail her. i have done a lot of business with Bourgeois and have met Dana several times and he is about as nice a guy as they come.

Sorry to hear about that rattle. I am still getting used to the JOM. It has a ton of headroom. It seems I cant play hard enough on it. Yeah Bonni is great up there. I a sure if there is anything wrong they will hook it up no problem. Again sorry to hear about that. Hey at least your bass player did not step on your guitar and crush it!!!

to forumites that have responded, thank you, I can report that this has turned into a good news good news story
I have rediscovered how much I enjoy my D-1A, I have discovered more of the mechanical side of Waverly tuning machines, 3rd & most important Bourgeois is fixed,
I thought I had checked the machines thoroughly, but since you were good enough to reply I thought look again
see what you are missing, well I took the new G string off this morning, hey its new I will pit it back in the set , put it on my Collings who knows how long I will be with out the vintage D, well it turns out there is a threaded collar that holds the post, knob, worm gear in place it must of come un-thread when the string broke
must have been loose to begin with, any way its all good now, back to house cleaning before my wife gets home
from work, then I think I will put that new set of strings on
thank you all
Fred Smile

All is good in the world of Fred now. Enjoy those two amazing guitars. We are all pretty lucky to have suck great instruments. They really do bring a smile to my face when I play. Love it.

Cheers
