Well it's been a long wait,2 and a half years, but well worth it.Since I read about Randy's work 10 years ago in Flatpicking magazine,I have always wanted one of his guitars.Received the instrument today, lucky Friday the 13th,and can say I am quite pleased with the guitar. It's a BW/Red with a bounded fretboard/headstock and a torch inlay with ivoried tuners.Pretty much a classic Lucas 28 look.I don't have alot of experience with BW but can say that it has a big voice with lots of reverb kinda of sustain.Very clear and has that crispy sharp rumble in the wound strings. The setup is perfect for me very easy to play and very responsive to the pick.It meets all my expectations and as always feel lucky to have it.Workmanship is perfect and highly detailed.Got in before Randy raised his prices website says "Please inquire"So I look forward to having a long satifying relationship with this guitar and I'm hopefully done on this buying spree only 2 more waiting to be built.

2007 Lucas KD-28

I picked up an LD-28 last year when Randy's client either didn't like the wood grain (what he told Randy) or didn't like a D and was ordering an OM-sized guitar from Randy (what Cotten was told when they got the instrument to sale). I saved a few bucks but missed getting to know Randy.

The guitar is great and I know you will love having a guitar made "just for you" by Randy. The LD-28 is by far my favorite guitar--notwithstanding the fact that I like slope-d's (got three) more because of the slightly different feel and where my pick naturally falls on the strings. The LD-28 is the only guitar that always stays out of the closet.

Congrats on a beautiful guitar.

Here's the back, abit to dark for my taste cause it's A grade but nevertheless it's the sound that is important.Steve thanks for the comment. After I sold my 1943 D18 I had some capital to work with.To ease the pain of selling the D18 I began to order the guitars I had heard about over the last many years, with the Lucas at the top of the list.So right now I own Collings Ds-1,Ds2hasb,Rockbridge D18,Nashville Guitar Company 12 fret Dread made of Mahogany and stika that was on the bottom of a lake for 75 years,Circa Coco/Red D28,Bourgie Country Box Deluxe(quilted mahogany)and have on order a Mitch Corbin D18 style with Koa B/S and either Red Spruce or Carpithian Spruce and finally another Rockbridge,a 12 fret dread BW/Red.I don't have family so I guess I can afford all of this so why not have fun doing so.

Hey Walt,

Nice Lucas! And that's a hell of a stable that you're building up....you're going to have a collection of some of the finest modern flatpicking guitars on the planet.

So how would you rate the Lucas against the Rockbridge??.......obviously it's BRW vs. Hog, but as we all seem to agree on, its the builder, and then the wood, not the other way around. So how bout it?

And I'd also like to hear some comments about that Circa.

Thanks Walt,

Steve

Hey Steve
Well both the Lucas and Rockbridge are amazing in their own way,The Rock is Loud, responsive and dry,Lucas is big, robust and very sonically rich, both guitars are very satisfying with a little more given to the Lucas,it's very close to a what a great sounding Pre-war Bone is.The Circa on the other hand is balanced, not as loud, more mordern sounding. It is not as open or big voiced, kinda like a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model.Nice but lacks the serious mojo of the other two.If I had to pick my fav for now, would have to go with the Lucas and the Collings DS2HASB both magnificent guitars.

So, Walt, just how did you pick those lottery numbers? Random? String gauges? Family birthdays? Finally, someone who makes me look restrained. Wait; I actually have five acoustics, too, but not as showy. Never mind.

Hey Walt, those pics even have "the other man's greener grass" in them. What I wouldn't give to have all those great guitars in front of me waiting to be played. I can almost hear them now.
Walt is a fine picker, I once stumbled onto a sound file of him playing a Merrill C18 when I was surfing the net.

The LD-28 is a beautiful guitar. I like the dark BRW on the back and sides. Looks like pretty high grade stuff. that's certainly a beautiful top on the guitar. Enjoy!!
