Most people can play Salt Creek, it's not for beginers or anything, but on youtube you'll see lots of folks picking that one out, and doing it well also.I really, really like this clip of Kenny, but of course he is playing his Martin D-18. Peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...D6mI&feature=related
I'm sure that would, in fact, be astounding if I could actually make out any of the notes.
I guess when you've got about 25 strings or so all simultaneously at full throttle, a mic on a cell phone or whatever doesn't exactly cut it . . .
pauljcat, what I like about Kenny Smith playing Salt Creek are his finesse and light touch, the tone he's getting (some credit to the D1A of course) and some of the rhythmic ideas in his phrasing. I'm not so interested in the tune, per se, as in the way he plays it.

I can appreciate his playing of Salt Creek too. I like, and prefer to listen to that sort of stuff alot of the time.
With that said,Dreadnaughts are the loudest and most powerful steel string guitar you can buy, especialy a mahogony D-18 style dread. That's what they're really for, power, projection, strength, and to be played hard. The Collings D1a is the top of that food chain. It is just so nice seeing and hearing it played by a new school player that's really digging in on it. If his playing was silly with just fast fills, which it is not, it is very improvised and colorful, I don't think there would be all of the clapping and looks of awe by bandmates, especialy David Grisman no less. Anyway, the instrument is actually the key factor here, and it's doing it's job better in his hands than most of them I've seen and heard. That's really all I am really saying.
They should have a contest with just this guitar alone, or maybe hog dreads only. That would be cool, I just don't know if we could handle it. Ha, ha.
