Last evening, I was watching an Elvis Costello show on Sundance channel- a great show with Norah Jones, Kris Kristopherson, Roseanne Cash, John Mellencamp (and an unnamed guitarist in the background playing a gorgeous Collings OM1 burst)
The upshot: Elvis Costello played a fairly new song that just knocked me out. It's called Sulphur to Sugar Cane, and has a kind of bluesy/dixieland feel- Elvis co-wrote it with T Bone Burnett. Help!! Does anyone have a bead on where to find lyric and tab on this song. I tried the usual Google search and got nada. I could go old school and watch it ten times on youtube, jot down the lyric, and guess at the chords, but I'm lazy. Anyone? It's a great song. thanks tom

Thanks very much, Duccy. I'll print out the lyric and go old school (okay, semi) and just listen to the changes on youtube. Looks to be in C7 with some dixieland/bluesy kinda changes. His new Cd, produced by Tbone Burnett, is supposed to be killer. thanks again. tom

tom,

Thanks for alerting me to that tune. Love Elvis and we perform a few of his. I don't know how I missed that one. BTW, his show on Sundance may be the best music shows since Shindig. They surely do a bunch of shows in one session 'cause one night the unmentioned backing band had Allen Toussaint on keys and James Burton on guitar. Not a bad pick-up band.

Randy: You're very welcome. I've like Mr. Costello since Allison and Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes. His show on Sundance channel is just great- last week he had his wife, Diana Krall, and Elton John. Diana did an impromptu version of Night Train that was just off the charts. Oh, and radio sucks! tom

My band (plugged-in acoustic trio) does Watching the Detectives and Red Shoes. BTW, radio sucks except for WXPN out of the University of Pennsylvania. A very unique station with pro DJs, including David Dye's World Café. Check it out online. Guaranteed to please.

Randy: I do Red Shoes solo; can't get my bands to go there, but, hey, we do some great stuff, with wide variety, so I'm okay with that.
If you come up with something on Sulphur to Sugar
Cane, I'd love a cheat sheet. The C7-G7 comp is obvious. I just need to listen some more. That's true in most areas of life, of course. I've been spending a lot of time wearing my writer hat of late, editing poetry and writing new material in preparation for two books, hopefully out by year's end. And, finishing up the novel to get on line by (God willing) July. So my ToneRite lender has been playing my guitars more than I have. My bad, but I have to write. It's why I'm here, even more than music, and that's goin' some. best tom

Yep, that's Elvis. Awkward, but purposely so, and with great intelligence. e.g. what's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding? Time to run some scales. gig night. tom
