The "What Collings would this be?" thread up in "Acoustic Guitars" mentioned Chris Smither and his Collings. My curiosity piqued, I went YouTubing (that's a hell of a river, let me tell you!) and encountered this song. Just about perfect, from my point of view, and LOL-able. Enjoy!

What a relief to hear a jewel like that -- now it's easier to understand why that poster wants a guitar just like Smither's . . .

I would recommend his CD's "Live as I'll Ever Be" (live selection of the best of earlier work) as well as "Train Home" and "Leave the Light On". All have the coveted Five Mallard endorsement and you'll save yourself time and trouble to order them all at once.

Chris will be at Jorma's Fur Peace camp in August. It's the Couple's Weekend, need I mention that my wife is a good sport? I'll be working with Verlon Thompson but hope to sneak some licks from Chris. He is a terrific performer and his instructional videos are excellent, too.

In a better world Chris Smither would be famous.

Chris's instructional DVD out that is worth the price of admission just to be up close and personal to his playing and personality. It is good. You can find it off his website and also at homespuntapes.

Great guitar playing.... lyrics may work for some....not for me.Reminds me of Joel Mabus...great instrumentalist but always trying to be cute with the lyrics...sometimes it works.

kinda rag-timey/John Priney. Harmless, and great playing. Love that right hand damping to get that thumpy walking bass part moving. and where DID the wives come from? I've read Genesis hundreds of times in several translations. we're all looking through a glass darkly, unless we think we've better vision than Saint Paul. Not me.

Along those lines...

It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.

cowboycamper: Ain't THAT the truth. Thus, we don't need to borrow trouble; there's plenty right here and now. thank God, literally, for music generally and the guitar specifically. tom

I love Chris' music. Don't care for the sound of that Collings, though. Sounds sterile, like a Fishman though a Baggs PADI. Actually, it sounds exactly like that blue Alvarez he used to play years ago.

Guess I'm spoiled by the K&K on my D1A and Larrived hog-top. They just sound so much more, well, acoustic.

Other Chris Smither gems - check out "No Love Today" or "Can't Shake These Blues." Wonderful stuff.

amen on the K&K. I need to lose the Para DI and get a K&K tube preamp, but..... I thought it might be wise to make the mortgage payments first. Silly me.
