No, I never heard the Mellancamp quote- but she is kinda a DaVinci, come back again in a much nicer body. Those early clips of her from Canadian Broadcasting, some as far back as '65, are just jaw dropping. And she thinks of herself as a painter first...... not only am I not in that league, I can even play the game! And, thanks, Chief, for the Blake clip. Make ya wanna get a 12 fret dread, or it does me. tom

El Jefe, thanks for the Norman clip; seen it many times, yet it impresses always. And Tom, in a word, you nailed it...effortless (seemingly, of course). Norman's right hand just seems so loose; and the left so fluid. About once a month I throw the "Whiskey Before Breakfast" CD on the player, and it gets me every time. Norman is as real as real can be. Imagine Norman picking solo on the back porch, maybe "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane". Priceless.

Certainly a very eclectic player, and he seems to have chosen the more contemporary route. However, Vince played a lot of bluegrass growing up and in the early days of his career, and can hold his own with a flatpick. He could step in and play rhythm and lead guitar with any bluegrass band going. I keep thinking one of these days he's going to do a VG goes BG project and raise a lot of eyebrows.

mr. woods: yeah, I've only heard a couple songs from Vince's pre-Pure Prairie League days, and it was evident he had Skaggs Syndrome: put an instrument in his hands and he plays the heck out of it. those who think of him just as a pretty singer haven't seen his tele and strat chops, which are world class. There's some good footage of him playing the festival in Chicago last summer with Clapton and Albert Lee and he's definitely in that category. Smokin'. tom

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure to see him play an ampithater at Lake Chatauqua last Summer. Just him on a stool with a standup bass player, a keyboardist, a guy playing one of those drum boxes and a rack of Martin OOOO's (interesting model), a Gibson Jumbo, a couple Teles, a strat...and he played the living crap out of all of them for 2+ solid hours. Just an awesome musician and entertainer. But the best part of the show was that there was so much blue hair at Lake Chatauqua, I felt younger than I have in many years

If you want to hear the broad spectrum of Vince Gill's playing, check out "These Days", the boxed set of 4 CDs (all new material) that came out in 2006. Got the Country, the Bluegrass, and the Rockin stuff. BTW, for BIG fun, go to YouTube and check out the video of Albert Lee, Vince and Danny Gatton playing together. A whole lot of awesome pickin going down on that clip. One of my favorites on YT.
